Ringsvassoya, Kvaloya, Ski on Norwegian sea Islands, april 2108
I’ve left French Alps and La Grave for the rest of that 2018 ski season and the 1 rs of april I’m in Tromso. I’ ll ski two days with Julian and 2 friends around there.
We arrive all together in Tromso after an important snow falls period and many days of level 4 avalanch risk.
The forecast is good. We ski the both days in a beautiful sun, no wind and cold temperatures.
Skis possibilities around Tromso are so many, in one hour driving from city center we access to an unbelievable number of peaks, in land or on islands. Most of those Island are accessible by car, linked by bridges or tunnels.
I wanted to discover, with my clients, two islands located in the west side of Tromso, Ringvassoya and Kvaloya.
Those two islands are closed from each other but really different. Ringvassoya’s mountains are round and pretty easy, Kvaloya is more abrupt, steep slope and sharped peaks. Kvaloya’s peaks reminds me in a certain way my dear Oisans.
The first day we ski Nordfjellet, a very popular and easy terrain ski tour. The slope is a low angle terrain, a long ridge of many kilometers, and we can ski safely in an amazing landscape, with 360° view. Even on that popular mountain, with a little bit of imagination, we make our own track in powder snow for 2/3 of the trip.
After this first day, now we know each other and we know the snow conditions.
For the second day, we thought to ski in Kvaloya. This beautiful inhabited island is located at a few kilometers from Tromso. Here peaks are sharped, wild, slopes are steep, so, easy ski terrain is already tracked. I chose to ski up and down Breitinden 963m. This hidden peaks is unknown from skiers and isn’t in any guide book.
We start early in the morning, the weather is sunny and cold ( -8°c ), the small village bottom foot is situated in a beautiful and wild fjord. Around there the ski possibilities are again amazing and the slopes are quite steep.
The peak we are skiing up is untracked. The snow is perfectly cold and smooth.
The arrival on top is impressive, this peak is vertiginous, dominate the fjord, and Norwegian sea makes a fantastic atmosphere for the place.
Kvaloya is a magic Island, I will come back.
