About la grave
The village of La Grave is located 15 km from the Col du Lautaret, in the Romanche valley, on the border of the departments of Isere and Hautes Alpes.
It is dominated by the imposing peak of La Meije (3983 m), on the edge of the Ecrins National Park
The village range between 1300 and 1800 m above sea level.
A Long time isolated at the bottom of the long valley of the Romanche, and despite the harshness of the winters, La Grave was already inhabited in the Middle Ages.
The road construction of the Lautaret pass frees access and movements.
As part of a stage of the Route des Grandes Alpes, summer tourism developed there after the Second World War.
In 1943, the village receives in summer ENSA courses, and the training of high mountain guides.
In 1964, the first lifts appear in Chazelet and initiate the development of winter tourism.
It is in 1976 that is built the cable car which leaves the village and raises the tourists to 3200m of altitude, at the Col des Ruillans.
This is a major event in the history of the village, summer tourists come to contemplate the glacier of the Girose in summer, then skiers from around the world are attracted by the immense slopes of a field left in the natural state.
Located at 1400 m altitude, at the foot of the north face of La Meije and Col du Lautaret, it is safe to say that the place is cold.
There is a climate of high mountains, with many days without thaw, heavy snow falls from November.
In recent years, weathered by global warming, weather phenomena have changed, but the high altitude of the ski area there guaranteed a good snowpack from January to April.
The ski area is a high mountain ski area, exclusively reserved for freeride.
The terrain profile is steep and demanding, there are many corridors skiing, but there are also places
much more accessible, just as wild and beautiful.
